Inspired by a line from Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', the title refers to 'a little, long, hollow place' that Crusoe made in his canoe and where he stored things when travelling round the island. The melody that goes throughout the work seems to create a space for itself within the surrounding music - forming a central core to the piece. A hollow core? Perhaps, but full of potential! There are also connotations here for 'secret, hidden spaces', or a certain 'detachment' or 'austerity'.
'A Hollow Place' was written in 2008 for the Wakeford/ Coverdale Piano Duo.
